March Meeting

Greater Cleveland NOW members and friends:
We have several important announcements to share, so please take a minute to read through this and mark your calendars for these upcoming events. First, we’re proud to sponsor a public forum on gun violence. Representatives from Moms Demand Action; Black Lives Matter; Everytown for Gun Safety; and New Voices for Reproductive Justice will briefly discuss the work their organizations are doing to raise awareness about issues of gun violence in our community, and the ways you can support that work. Then, Susan Reis from Ohioans for Gun Safety will discuss the need for universal background checks, and the steps that we can all take to move those policies forward.

Approaches to Curbing Gun Violence: A Public Forum

Date: Monday, March 19, 2018
Time: 6:30 pm
Location:  SEIU District 1199 Union Hall, 1771 E. 30th Street, Cleveland, OH  44114 (Between Chester and Payne; look for the Budget Office Furniture Signs and park behind the building)
Because of this month’s gun forum, our March chapter meeting will be held via conference call. The meeting will be very brief, as we’re primarily looking to form an elections committee to help secure candidates for the positions of Chapter President; Action Vice President; Secretary; and Treasurer. We’ll also discuss participation in this year’s Pride festival.

Service on the Election committee will require only a few hours’ time at most between now and our annual meeting in June, so please consider joining it. And of course, I hope you’ll consider running for one of the officer positions. You can find descriptions of each position, as well as information about qualifying for office, length of term, etc., in the Chapter Bylaws and Operating Rules.

Looking ahead, remember that chapter meetings are now scheduled for the third Tuesday of the month. Recognizing that people are really busy, I’m hoping to reserve in-person meetings for when we have a guest speaker or a direct action, and use the conference call format for brief check-ins to cover chapter business. With that in mind, please note the following:

Pam McKee

We’ll discuss upcoming officer elections, political strategy for 2018, and have a briefing on where things stand with reproductive rights in Ohio after the recent Ohio Supreme Court rulings in two key cases.

June Chapter Meeting

Greetings NOW members:
Join us as we welcome Brian Harrington, board member at the LGBT Center, and tri-chair of the recent Pride in the CLE festival, who will discuss exciting developments at the Center, and will help us debrief on Pride in the CLE. Then we’ll plan for our booth at Cleveland Pride.

We will need volunteers to help staff our booth, and we really need to borrow a 10 x 10 tent! If you can help out, please email Pam at pammckee@sbcglobal.net or let Leslie know at the meeting.

We will also vote on proposed bylaws and operating rules. You can find those here:

Proposed NOW Cleveland Chapter Bylaws and Operating Rules

Ratify: April meeting

Greetings NOW Cleveland members:

Several important announcements!

Chapter meeting: Plan to join us Wednesday, April 19th at 6:30 p.m. in our new location at the Community Shares meeting room. Community Shares is located at  3631 Perkins Ave., Cleveland, 44113It’s in a large warehouse on north side of Perkins between E 36th and E 40.   Perkins is between Chester and Payne. Parking and entry is off Perkins east of the bldg. Enter through the door closest to Perkins.  Directions to meeting room are posted inside the bldg.
The minutes from our March meeting are attached. Thank you to Mary Boyle for serving as our scribe!
A key agenda item will be discussion of the proposed Chapter Bylaws and Operating Rules (please see attached), which we’ll vote on at the June meeting.
Other agenda items include creating a banner and signs for the upcoming March for Science (April 22nd in downtown Cleveland), for which we are a community partner; recruiting members for NOW’s team for the upcoming Bowl-a-Thon to benefit Preterm’s Access Fund (which helps women needing abortion care afford their procedure—see link below); organizing carpools if needed for the Roe Together Statehouse Advocacy Day (a.k.a. Pro-Choice Lobby Day) on May 3rd; and discussion of participation in Cleveland Pride and other summer events.

Finally, below are two important links: the first is to the Eventbrite page for the Roe Together event. Registration is required. There will be bus service from Cleveland for those needing transportation, but seats are limited. Once you are on the ticket order page, you’ll find a checkbox at the very bottom that you can use to indicate your interest in reserving a seat, if available.  The second is a link to the Bowl-a-Thon page. Note that only bowlers are permitted at the event because of space limitation, and each bowler must commit to raising a minimum of $50. We’re hoping to do some group fundraising at the meeting!

We very much hope to see you Wednesday. If you are unable to attend, but have comments or concerns about the proposed bylaws and operating rules, please send them via email to Pam McKee at pammckee@sbcglobal.net

With thanks,
